Mathematics

We offer math classes every week. Classes are structured according to students skill set and interest. For the most part Math classes focus on number sense and numerics, Geometry, patterning and Algebra, and probability.

Mathematics are organized so that Sidewalk School students will not fall behind their peers, as Sidewalk School students are facing displacement. The Math curriculum is built with the interest and experience of the students in mind, while also considering curriculums used in the US for each age group.

Classes are structured to provide students tangible skills that they may use in their everyday life. The primary goal of the English classes is for students to become conversational in English.

All students attending the Sidewalk School are originally from Spanish or Haitian-Creole speaking countries. All are currently experiencing statelessness in the border zone between the US and Mexico awaiting their asylum case to be considered in the US immigration courts. because they are seeking resettlement in the US. Speaking English will allow them to communicate with US immigration officials, and also communicate with fellow community members pending their resettlement in the US.

Science

Science classes encourage the development of problem solving and reasoning through the interaction with the natural world. In a typical Science class, students break up into smaller groups and work on different Science projects, once complete, students must reflect on different occurrences, and form their own conclusions on each project.

Science classes are organized to encourage students to ask questions and to be excited to make new discoveries. Additionally, while the Science curriculum is built with the interest and experience of the students in mind, the Sidewalk School also considers curriculums used in the US for each age group.
